Second Stewardess, Jemma Somerville-Smith
(Kiwi, Age 29)
Jemma was raised in New Zealand. Her sailing experience began
at a young age, living aboard a 50 ft. ketch, ‘Argonauta II,’ and
cruising the Pacific Islands for three years from the age of 4 to 7-
years. Her family later owned a 36 ft. Lidgard sloop ‘Aparangi’ on
which she participated in family sailing and racing. When back
home in New Zealand, Jemma has joined teams competing in the Marlborough twilight
summer racing series.
Jemma began working in the luxury yachting industry in June 2003, but not before earning
a Bachelor’s of Design Degree in Interior Architecture from Christchurch Polytechnic. Her
experiences prior to yachting also included working as a head dental assistant for four
years…But when the Sea finally called, Jemma took a position as a Stewardess on a luxury
charter yacht cruising the Med, the Caribbean, and the East Coast U.S., and she has
remained in yachting every since. After working on several different high-profile mega
yachts, both private and charter, Jemma made her way to her M/Y StarFire home earlier
this year.
In her spare time, Jemma enjoys travel, sailing, the arts, sports, and cooking. She also
recently received her Seafarer Medical Certificate. Photography is another of Jemma’s
passions, and she has even taken courses to study the craft.
