Mate / 3rd Engineer Andy Hall (English Age 20)
Andy is 20 years old and grew up in Merseyside, England. His hobbies include all types of sports, especially canoeing, windsurfing, jet skiing, sailing, soccer, rugby, and Rollerblading.
Andy participated in many activity-related fundraising events, including a 15-mile annual Wirral coastal walk. He also partook in a 100-mile march over four days in Nijmegan, Holland, which was coordinated by a youth group.
Earning his Gliders Pilot’s License in 2002, Andy went on two “chance of a lifetime” Tall ship voyages, organized by the local police as a reward for youths with no criminal records. Andy served as Crew during the first voyage, and during his second adventure he served as a Watch Officer, responsible for the well-being of 16 crew members aging from 16-24 yrs for two weeks. His ship cruised from England to France to Ireland then back to England again. This experience was the main impetus for getting Andy where he is today.
After the Tall ship experience, Andy went to a sailing school, gained some basic courses, and worked there part-time while he was in College studying for his A levels. Andy left College with nine GCSE’s A-C grade, two A levels, Physics and Geography and an AS level in Resistant Materials Technology.
Andy has worked on board since August 2002 as Deckhand/Engineer, which has allowed him to travel extensively from the Mediterranean to Hong Kong via the Suez Canal. Andy then sailed from Hong Kong, via the Panama Canal, to Savannah, Georgia, where he assisted the boat in a major refit. During his time aboard StarFire, Andy has decided that he would like to follow the route to becoming an engineer. He spends his holidays taking extra courses to benefit his knowledge base and hopefully reduce the time taken to become an excellent 2nd engineer.
